Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi: A Controversial Figure – Unraveling the Mystery Behind the Karni Sena Chief’s Death and the Absence of Police Protection
Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, the leader of Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, was fatally shot at his residence on December 5. The two individuals captured in viral CCTV footage remain at large, prompting an extensive operation to apprehend them. Rajasthan police, supported by a specialized investigation team (SIT), is pursuing numerous leads, resulting in the detention of over 80 suspects. Nevertheless, a direct connection to the perpetrators has not been established.
The responsibility for the murder has been claimed by Rohit Godara, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Rajasthan police is exploring four potential motives for the killing:
- An escalating feud between Gogamedi and gangster Ankit Bhadu from the Bishnoi gang, stemming from Bhadu’s involvement in several Ganganagar murders. Bhadu was slain in a 2019 encounter, with suspicions that Gogamedi had leaked his information, leading to the Karni Sena chief’s inclusion on the Bishnoi gang’s hit list.
- Gangster Sampat Nehra, incarcerated in Bhatinda, sought to expand his operations in the Churu area, targeting Gogamedi. Punjab police communicated this intelligence to Rajasthan authorities.
- Alleged discord with the late gangster Anand Pal Singh, known to be close to Gogamedi. The Karni Sena chief conducted a donation drive in Singh’s name but purportedly failed to deliver the funds to Singh’s family. Singh’s daughter, Chinu, allegedly involved in criminal activities, had reportedly threatened Gogamedi, potentially playing a role in his assassination.
- Chotu Bhatt, once a close associate of Gogamedi, has since aligned with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and may have orchestrated the attack.
Rajasthan police perceives the incident as a revenge killing, emphasizing that Gogamedi, with a history of criminal activities documented in over 30 cases, lacked the status of a saint. Despite seeking police security since 2016, his requests were consistently denied by both the Ashok Gehlot and Vasundhara Raje administrations.
