Karwa Chauth 2024 – Date, Puja Timings, Significance, and Details

India, known for its rich traditions and festivals, celebrates Karwa Chauth or Karaka Chaturthi, a special festival observed by Hindu women in Northern and Western India. This day is dedicated to praying for the long life, safety, and good health of their husbands.

India is a land rich in festivals and religious traditions. Karwa Chauth, also known as Karaka Chaturthi, is one of the many festivals celebrated by Hindu women in Northern and Western India. This day is dedicated to praying for the long life, safety, and good health of their husbands or future partners.

Like many Hindu festivals, Karwa Chauth follows a lunisolar variation of the Hindu calendar and occurs on the fourth day (Chaturthi Tithi) after the full moon, during the Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. In 2024, Karwa Chauth will be observed on October 20.

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, involves the use of an earthen pot, or Karwa, through which a water offering, called Argha, is made to the moon. The Karwa holds significant importance during the Puja and is often given as Dan to a Brahmin or any eligible woman.

On this day, married women worship Lord Shiva and His family, including Lord Ganesha, and break their fast only after sighting and making offerings to the moon. The fasting observed on Karwa Chauth is strict, with women refraining from food and even water from sunrise until the moon is visible in the night sky.

The festival also aligns with the wheat-sowing season for the Rabi crop. In this context, large earthen pots used to store wheat are sometimes referred to as karvas. It is believed that the fast may have originated as a prayer for a bountiful harvest in this predominantly wheat-eating Northwestern region.

On Karwa Chauth, several meaningful activities and traditions can enhance the experience, making it spiritually enriching and valuable:

  1. Preparing the Sargi: The day begins early with a pre-dawn meal (Sargi), traditionally given by the mother-in-law. It is a symbol of love and blessings. Preparing and consuming it with gratitude sets a positive tone for the fast.
  2. Fasting with Devotion: Observing the fast with full faith and a calm mind is central. The fast symbolizes sacrifice and devotion for the well-being and long life of the husband.
  3. Engaging in Prayer and Meditation: Spending time in prayer and meditation during the day adds spiritual value. Reciting Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha or reading spiritual texts brings focus and purpose to the fast.
  4. Performing Puja Rituals: In the evening, a dedicated Puja is performed with an earthen pot (Karwa), diya (lamp), and offerings. The moon is worshipped, and women pray for the well-being of their husbands.
  5. Connecting with Community: Sharing the rituals with other women or family strengthens bonds. Exchanging gifts and blessings adds joy to the occasion.
  6. Acts of Charity: Engaging in charity or helping those in need during Karwa Chauth enhances the significance of the day, spreading love and goodwill.
  7. These activities not only uphold tradition but also reinforce love, faith, and connection with family and community.
