“A shipment of approximately 6.5 metric tons of medical aid and 32 metric tons of disaster relief supplies has been dispatched to support the people of Gaza.”

On Sunday, India extended humanitarian support to the distressed Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, amidst the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. A shipment comprising nearly 6.5 tonnes of medical aid and 32 tonnes of disaster relief materials has been dispatched to Palestine, with the aid destined to reach the region via Egypt.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi shared on X (formerly Twitter), ‘An IAF C-17 flight carrying nearly 6.5 tonnes of medical aid and 32 tonnes of disaster relief materials for the people of Palestine departs for El-Arish airport in Egypt.

“These supplies are scheduled for transportation to Palestine through the Rafah border crossing connecting Egypt and Gaza.

Bagchi disclosed that the humanitarian aid encompasses ‘vital life-saving medications, surgical supplies, tents, sleeping bags, tarps, hygiene facilities, water purification tablets, and various other essential items.’

India’s assistance to Palestine follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s conversation with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, which took place three days ago. During their discussion on Thursday, PM Modi assured President Abbas of India’s continued commitment to providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. He also expressed his condolences for the civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip resulting from an airstrike on a hospital.

‘In our conversation, we both expressed profound concern over the terrorism, violence, and the deteriorating security situation in the region. I reiterated India’s unwavering, principled stance on the Israel-Palestine matter,’ PM Modi stated following his conversation with President Abbas.”

“The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which commenced on October 7th after an unexpected and unprecedented attack by the Palestinian group, has resulted in a tragic loss of more than 5,000 lives on both sides. This conflict has also given rise to a significant humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Hamas’s aggressive incursion into southern Israeli towns, where they targeted civilians on the streets and in their homes, has garnered widespread condemnation from global leaders and nations. Israel’s counteroffensive, known as ‘Operation Iron Swords,’ is focused on dismantling Hamas operative bases in Gaza, leading to widespread devastation in the region. Many civilians have been forced to leave their homes, essential services are disrupted, and hospitals are operating under severe strain. A recent airstrike on a Gaza hospital, which reportedly resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives, has drawn strong criticism from world leaders. While Hamas claims that Israeli rocket strikes caused the tragedy, Israel has denied this assertion.

Meanwhile, Israel is making preparations for a ground offensive in Gaza with a coordinated strategy to confront Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously stated that his country intends to ‘crush and destroy’ Hamas.”
